Crowns and Temporary Crowns

A crown (also known as a dental cap) is a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant.

Temporary crowns are made of acrylic and placed with impermanent cement designed to make for easy removal when it is time to place the permanent crown.

A crown may be needed when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth.

It is normal for you to experience some hot and cold temperature sensitivity with the temporary crown!

Temporary crowns also tend to be more rough than final restorations. This may cause some sensitivity to your gums while the temp crown is in place. Rinsing with warm salt water can help alleviate this sensitivity

Avoid chewing of the tooth on the temporary if at all possible. We recommend chewing on the opposite side while the temp crown is in place.

Avoid any foods that are sticky, chewy, hard or brittle as they may cause the temporary crown to break or come off.

Avoid flossing the temporary because often times this will pull off the crown

In the event the temporary comes off, you may either place it back on yourself by filling the inside with Vaseline or toothpaste, or you can call the office to have it placed back on in office.

If the temporary breaks, please call the office to have the temporary remade
